About the Moose

Moose are the largest of all the deer species. Males are immediately recognizable by their huge antlers, which can spread 6 feet from end to end. Moose have long faces and muzzles that dangle over their chins. A flap of skin known as a bell sways beneath each moose's throat.

Behavior in Summer and Winter

Moose are so tall that they prefer to browse higher grasses and shrubs because lowering their heads to ground level can be difficult.

In winter they eat shrubs and pinecones, but they also scrape snow with their large hooves to clear areas for browsing on mosses and lichens. These hooves also act as snowshoes to support the heavy animals in soft snow and in muddy or marshy ground. In summer, food is far more plentiful in the northern regions of North America, Europe, and Asia.

When the ice melts, moose are often seen in lakes, rivers, or wetlands, feeding on aquatic plants both at and below the surface. Moose are at home in the water and, despite their staggering bulk, are good swimmers. They have been seen paddling several miles at a time, and will even submerge completely, staying under for 30 seconds or more. Moose are similarly nimble on land. They can run up to 35 miles an hour over short distances and trot steadily at 20 miles per house.

Breeding

Breeding. Males, called bulls, bellow loudly to attract mates each September and October. The usually solitary bulls may come together at this time to battle with their antlers for mating supremacy. After mating, the two sexes go their separate ways until the following year. Though they may occasionally feed on the same grounds, they tend to ignore each other.

Females give birth to one or two calves in the spring—each weighing some 30 pounds. These calves grow quickly and can outrun a person by the time they are just five days old. Young moose stay with their mothers until the following mating season.

Remote Fishing in Alaska

Stephan Lake Lodge is considered the last stronghold for remote fishing in Alaska. Located on 5-mile-long Stephan Lake the lodge makes an ideal setting for some of the best fishing for Rainbow & Lake Trout, Dolly Varden, and Arctic Grayling. At varying times through the summer Chinook (King), Sockeye (Red) and Coho (Silver) begin appearing. Fish are also plentiful in nearby streams and rivers. The fishing season begins in early June for Rainbow Trout, Arctic Grayling and Lake Trout in the pristine lake. Salmon fishing begins in July with King Salmon and Red Salmon followed by great Silver Salmon in August. in addition to Rainbow Trout and Grayling in the nearby clear water tributary streams.

This outfit is located northeast of Anchorage, Alaska.They offer 5-star lodging with a daily fly in/out Moose hunts.These short flights to the hunting grounds are around 10 minutes.Each hunter is allowed one flight in and one flight out at no charge per day.Any additional use of the plane is $400 an hour.The staff wants you to know you can fly as much as possible, so don’t be shy to ask for a tour of the landscape!When you land in the hunting grounds, you will be on about 1 million acres of over the counter tag hunting.There is an additional 1 million acres that each hunter can put in a draw for.So you could be hunting 2 million acres of land, talk about free-range!

A standard moose only hunt is $22,500 per person for a 10-day visit to Stephan Lake.In their 2018 season, they had 16 moose hunters, 14 of which were able to harvest a moose.The two hunts that were unsuccessful were not due to a lack of animals or guidance.

One gentleman was older and chose to stay at the lodge for most of the hunt, while the other was injured.

Stephan's Lake Lodge is so confident in their outfit, if you hunt each day provided by the outfitter and are unsuccessful at harvesting a moose, they will credit half of your money towards a hunt the following year.

The bottom line is that Stephan's Lake always goes above and beyond.One gentleman was completely unable to walk.So they flew him in, placed him in a tent blind and sent the guides out.The guides were able to locate a moose about 2 miles away.In quarter-mile increments, they called the moose closer and closer to the hunter.Soon they had the moose in range and the hunter was able to take the shot and harvest the moose!

Another hunt, which is their most popular, is the moose/grizzly combo hunt.This hunt is $35,000 per person for a 10-day hunt.First, the outfitters want you to know that if you harvest a moose, there is a 100% success rate on the bear hunt.Basically, you will be hunting the gut pile after your moose is cleaned and removed from the field.Within 48 hours there will be a grizzly on that pile for you to take a shot at.This combo hunt comes with much more than just a moose and a grizzly.Each combo hunt includes 3 black bears, a wolf, and a wolverine.Once the combo hunt is purchased the outfit will enter each hunter into a drawing for a caribou tag at no charge.If drawn there is a 100% success rate on the caribou hunt.This hunt typically takes one day to fill the tag with the amount of caribou in the area.

No matter which hunt you purchase, there is top shelf fishing located at the lodge for each hunter to enjoy while they stay with Stephan Lake Lodge. The odds for success at Stephan’s Lake are higher than other lodges and need to be considered in the ticket price. With many lakes to fish on, once hunters complete their harvest they may move to fish any of the healthy lakes in the area.
